1. Visārada Sutta.– Five things that give confidence to a woman: beauty (rūpa), wealth (bhoga), relatives (ñāti), sons (putta), and virtue (sīla). S.iv.245. See also the Pasayha Sutta and Abhibhuyya Sutta, which are both very similar.
2. Pañcasīla Visārada Sutta.– A woman who abstains from taking life, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and and intoxicants, lives in confidence. S.iv.250 .
3. Visārada Sutta.– A man who takes life, takes what is not given, commits sexual misconduct, lies, and takes intoxicants, such a man lives as a layman without confidence. Following the opposite course, he lives with confidence. A.iii.203.
4. Visārada Sutta.– Endowed with ten things a female lay disciple (upāsikā) lives without confidence. What ten? She is one who takes life (pāṇātipātinī hoti), she takes what is not given (adinnādāyinī hoti), she commits sexual misconduct (kāmesumicchācārinī hoti), she tells lies (musāvādinī hoti), she speaks slander (pisuṇāvācā hoti), she speaks harsh words (pharusavācā hoti), she engages in idle chatter (samphappalāpinī hoti), she is covetous (abhijjhālunī hoti), she is has thoughts of ill-
