Udakarahada Sutta
There are four kinds of lake:
- Shallow (uttāno), but it appears deep (gambhirobhāsa),
- Deep (gambhiro), but it appears shallow (uttānobhaso),
- Shallow and it appears shallow,
- Deep and it appears deep.
So, also, there are four classes of people:
- Shallow, but appears deep,
- Deep, but appears shallow,
- Shallow and appears shallow
- Deep and appears deep. (A.ii.105‑6)
The first is serene and composed, inspiring faith (pāsādikaṃ), but does not comprehend the Four Noble Truths. The second is not serene, but does comprehend the Four Noble Truths. The third is neither, the fourth is both.
