Putta Sutta

1. Putta Sutta.– A female lay disciple (upāsikā) should teach her only son to be like Citta-gahapati, Hatthaka Āḷavaka, or like Sāriputta and Mahā-Moggallāna. S.ii.235.

2. Putta Sutta.– There are four kinds of recluses: the recluse unshaken, the red lotus recluse, the white lotus recluse, and the delicate lotus recluse. The recluse unshaken refers to a monk practising for Arahantship, who is like the son of a head anointed king waiting for the day of his coronation. The red lotus recluse refers to a monk who attained liberation through bare insight, the white lotus recluse to one who also attains the eight absorptions, the delicate lotus recluse refers to the Buddha himself, who mostly obtains food specially prepared for him, wears fine robes, hears mostly kind speech, and enjoy freedom from disease and discomfort. A.ii.86.

3. Putta Sutta.– Five things that make parents desire a son.

  1. Having been supported by us, he will support us in return,
  2. He will do work for us,
  3. He will prolong the family lineage,
  4. He will manage our inheritance,
  5. He will share merits with us when we have passed away. A.iii.44.
