Taraṇiya Thera

1. Taraṇiya Thera.– An Arahant. In a previous birth he took the Buddha and his monks across a river which was in flood. Thirteen world-cycles ago he became king five times under the name of Sabhogavā (Ap.i.204 f).

He is probably identical with Sambhūta Thera. ThagA.i.47.

2. Taraṇiya Thera.– An Arahant. Ninety-one world-cycles ago he took Vipassī Buddha and his monks across a river in a boat. Ap.i.234.

3. Taraṇiya Thera.– An Arahant. Ninety-one world-cycles ago he built a bridge on an impassable road. Fifty-five world-cycles ago he was a king, Samogadha by name. Ap.i.238.

4. Taraṇiya Thera.– An Arahant. In a previous birth he was a turtle in the river Vinatā, and, seeing that Atthadassī Buddha wished to cross the river, he took him on his back. Ap.ii.428 f.
