Issariya Sutta

v.l. Issara Sutta.– One of the Suttas in the Devatā Saṃyutta. Questions are asked as to what makes for lordship among men, what is the supreme commodity, what is a rusty sword, what is considered a plague? Whom do they arrest when he takes away? Who when he takes away is dear? In whom do the wise take delight when he returns again and again?

The answer is that the power of command it is which brings lordship, women are the supreme commodity, anger is a rusty sword,  thieves are considered to be a plague. A thief is arrested when he takes away, but a recluse, when he takes away is dear. The wise delight when a recluse returns again and again (for alms). S.i.43.
